Nacka Grace receives the Urban Design Award 2024
Published 6/18/2025Wallenstam's housing project Nacka Grace has received the Urban Design Award 2024 from Nacka Municipality. The award is based on the votes of Nacka residents and is presented to the construction project that contributes to attractive and sustainable urban development.
Nacka Grace is a newly constructed block in the Stadshuskvarteren district in Central Nacka, inspired by the Swedish Grace design movement of the 1920s. With 169 rental apartments and 12 commercial premises, the project has become a highly regarded feature of the cityscape - and proof that it is possible to build with high architectural quality even today. The jury's motivation reads as follows:
"In a new urban space where contemporary residential blocks are taking shape, this project stands out. Inspired by the Swedish Grace design movement of the 1920s, the architects have created a residential block, which interprets tradition without compromising the functional requirements and needs of our time."
"I am really impressed by Nacka Grace and the quality that exists in everything from the big features to the smallest details. Many people say that it is not possible to build like this today but Wallenstam has proven the opposite and I am both happy and proud that they have chosen to do so in Nacka and have thus made a great contribution to making Nacka better," says Johan Krogh, the Centre Party (C), Chairman of the Environment and Urban Planning Committee.
Among its contemporary neighbors, the block Nacka Grace stands as a reminder that modern architecture does not always need to break new ground.
"It is fantastic that you can build with this quality today. It is a lavish building with all the quality and level of detail needed to create attractive architecture. And a special word of praise to everyone involved who really worked hard to recreate the architecture of the 1920s," says Nina Åman, City Architect in Nacka Municipality.
"The fact that Nacka Grace is being recognized in this way is a great testament to the commitment and care we put into this project. We wanted to create a block that both lasts over time and adds something to the place - with beautiful details, solid materials and a look that ties in with Swedish building tradition," says Mathias Aronsson, Vice CEO of Wallenstam.
Nacka Grace has been designed by Brunnberg & Forshed Arkitektkontor in collaboration with Liljewall Arkitekter. The award was presented at a ceremony in Nacka City Hall on June 18.
