Insect hotel, wood mould boxes and beehives at Wallenstam

Published 6/7/2021

An insect hotel at Kungstorget square, beehives on Bergakungen's roof and in Guldheden as well as wood mould boxes at Gärdet are some examples of Wallenstam's contribution to greater biological diversity in Gothenburg and Stockholm. Meanwhile, the initiatives have created new homes for small animals right next to pre-existing properties.

"Through excellent initiatives in our management operations, we have recently been able to contribute bird nesting boxes, insect hotels, beehives and wood mould boxes right next to several of our properties. These are sustainable initiatives with biological diversity in focus, which represent an important part of our sustainability work," says Karin Mizgalski, Sustainability Manager at Wallenstam.

A few weeks' ago, 240,000 new `tenants' moved into their beehives on Bergakungen's roof. The beekeepers in the biotope together with Wallenstam have started the construction of several bee communities there. The honey is in full production and the hope is to be able to contribute to increased pollination in parks and green areas nearby.

At Kungstorget square in Gothenburg, Wallenstam has taken the initiative to build a larger insect hotel, which will inject life into the façade while creating a wonderful home for valuable pollinators such as butterflies, bumblebees and ladybirds. At the same time, new oak trees and wood mould boxes - boxes that resemble bird nesting boxes but which are intended for insects, have been placed at the New York block at Gärdet in Stockholm. The aim of this initiative is to maintain a dispersal pathway for species living in oak trees between northern and southern Djurgården.

"In addition to our four steering climate targets, our sustainability work is also focused on five prioritized global goals within the UN's Agenda 2030. Our colleagues' efforts to promote biological diversity together with our climate targets are a natural and important part of our work as an urban developer," says Karin Mizgalski, Sustainability Manager at Wallenstam.
